Chris Edelstein continued on his offensive streak, going 3-for-4 with
3 singles, 1 run batted in, and a stolen base. He managed to raise his
batting average from .261 to .419 over the course of the double header.
Hale pitched a pretty good game, keeping the Horns in it 'til the end.
Sadly, Halter was not able to shut the Cyclones down when he came on
in the 9th.
[Grumble alert!] The Horns pulled out the ever-popular (that's called
sarcasm, boys and girls) intentional walk play twice today. Both
intentionally walked batters (actually, it was the same batter both
times) scored. Why the team walked a .303 hitter to get to a .405
hitter baffles me no end. Honestly, I understand the desire to set up
the double play. But, why not at least pitch carefully to the batter you
want to walk (maybe he'll do something to help you out) rather than just
give up entirely on the idea of pitching to him? Ugh. I hate it. Hate
it. Hate it. By the way, since the last time I
wrote about this, the Horns have taken their record of intentionally
walked players who end up scoring from 5-of-9 (.556) to 8-of-13 (.615)
in the games I've scored this year. Those are miserable odds.
Have I mentioned how much I hate this play?
And so...
Game summary:
- 1st inning
- ISU (4 earned runs):
- Runk doubled to the lf/cf gap.
- Duncan walked (3-1 count).
- Leimbek walked to load the bases.
- Uelmen singled to rf (2 rbi). Runk and Duncan scored. Leimbek
to 2b. On the play, the Horns had Uelmen caught in a run down
on the throw in from rf. Leimbek broke for 3b and was thrown
out. I think it went 9-1-3-5. Nice play. Uelmen ended up on
2b when the throw went to 3b.
- Wierzbicki grounded out to 2b (4-3). Uelmen to 3b.
- McDonough hit a homerun over the Green Monster in cf (2 rbi).
That's the second homerun over the Monster this year. Cridland
hit one against Rice. This marks the
24th homerun to clear the Green Monster during a game since the
Disch opened in 1975.
- O'Brien struck out swinging.

- Texas:

- Leimbek reached on a fielder's choice to 3b (Aspito fielded and
stepped on 3b for the out).

scored.

- 8th inning
- ISU:

the play.

- ISU sent Larkin in to pitch.
- Aspito lined out to ss.
- Sepulveda hit a towering homerun over the lf fence (rbi).
- Nicholson grounded out to ss (6-3).
- Edelstein singled to lf.
- Cox doubled to shallow cf. Edelstein to 3b. On the play,
Edelstein tried to take home as the ball fell safely in a crowd
(cf, rf, ss, 2b) in shallow cf. The second baseman ended up
fielding and threw the ball in. The relay (4-3-2) was ruled in
time but it didn't look to me like Scott made the tag. Oh well.
- 9th inning
- ISU (3 earned runs):
- Bjorklund singled to cf.
- Runk hit a sac bunt toward the mound (1-3). Bjorklund to 2b.
- Duncan was intentionally walked. [Ed. note: sighhhhhh....]

Duncan to 2b.

- Wierzbicki singled to lf (rbi). Duncan scored. Uelmen to 3b.
- During McDonough's at bat, Wierzbicki was caught off base. Then,
Uelmen broke for home. The throw home was late. Wierzbicki
decided (a bit late) to go ahead and try for 2b and was thrown
out. I think the play went 1-4-2-4-3-1. I think.
