What stark contrast to yesterday's game! The
weather was great again: mostly sunny with temps in the low 80s and a
stiff wind out to lf. The UT Choir sang the National Anthem to start
things off. Kevin Costner was in the crowd...and boy did that news
spread like wild fire.
Random notes:
- Texas struck out only once in the game. Wow.
- Bess had only given up 3 homeruns in 67 innings this season. Today,
he gave up 2 in 1+ innings of work.
- Cridland reached safely each of the 5 times he went to the plate and
was a triple short of hitting for the cycle.
- Cridland's homerun was a bullet that cleared the Green Monster in
dead cf. It was only the 23rd time a homerun was hit over the
20-foot high fence in cf during a game since Disch-Falk opened in
1975.
- Cox reached in 5 of 6 plate appearances and scored a game-high 3
runs.
- Rice had 8 hits in-a-row in its 8-run 3rd inning, one more than they
managed in their 6-run 6th inning yesterday.
- All of those 8 runs came with 2 outs in the inning. The 3 runs
scored in the 9th also came with 2 outs.
- The official scorer counted two hits that I would've scored as
errors had I been in charge. That would've ruined Cridland's
perfect on-base performance in today's game, though.
- Kurtz-Nicholl threw 6 pitches in the bottom of the 5th to retire
the side. Munroe turned around and threw 5 pitches in the top of
the 6th.
- Halter pitched to only one batter and got the win.
Today's was a very exciting game. And, I wouldn't have missed it for
all the world. The emotional highs and lows are hard to beat.
Especially when the highs end up outnumbering the lows. Naturally.
And so...
Game summary:
- 1st inning
- Rice:
- Richards walked (3-1 count).
- Williams hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
- Crosby flew out to lf.
- Texas (2 earned runs):
- Cox walked (full count).
- Sepulveda popped out to 1b on a bunt attempt.
- Cridland hit the first pitch thrown to him over the Green Monster
in dead cf (2 rbi).
- Schumacher grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Aspito walked and was then caught stealing (2-6) during Kolbach's
at bat.
- 2nd inning
- Rice:
- Hodge grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Thames flew out to cf.
- Baker walked on 4 pitches.
- Savarino grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas (5 earned runs):
- Kolbach hit the first pitch over the wall in lf (rbi).
- Nicholson singled down the line in lf.
- Moore tripled off the wall in cf (rbi).
- Rice sent Kurtz-Nicholl in to pitch.
- Richardson walked (full count).
- Cox singled to rf (rbi). Moore scored. Richardson moved to 3b.
- During Sepulveda's at bat, Cox moved to 2b on a wild pitch.
- Sepulveda grounded out to the pitcher (1-3).
- Cridland reached on an infield single (rbi). Richardson scored.
Cox moved to 3b. On this play, the first baseman booted the ball
off the heal of his glove and couldn't catch up with it in time
to throw Cridland out. 'Looked like an error to me but the
official scorer apparently disagreed.
- Schumacher singled up the middle (rbi). Cox scored. Cridland
moved to 2b.
- Cridland stole 3b on the first pitch to Aspito.
- Aspito grounded out to the pitcher (1-3).
- Kolbach popped out to 2b.
- 3rd inning
- Rice (8 earned runs):
- Savarino grounded out to ss (6-3).
- Curry singled up the middle.
- Richards flew out to cf.
- Williams walked on 4 pitches.
- Crosby doubled to lf (2 rbi).
- Hodge hit a homerun over the 405 sign in lf (2 rbi).
- Thames doubled on a high fly ball to shallow rf. On the play,
Nicholson was running hard for the ball and caught up to it but
dropped it. This is the second hit I would've scored as an error.
- Baker doubled to the lf corner (rbi).
- Berg singled up the middle (rbi).
- Texas sent Munroe in to pitch.
- Savarino singled to cf. Berg moved to 3b.
- Curry singled to cf (rbi). Berg scored. Savarino moved to 3b.
- Richards singled to lf (rbi). Savarino scored. Curry moved to
3b.
- Williams grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas (2 earned runs):
- Nicholson doubled off the wall at the 405 mark in left-cf.
- Moore doubled on a high fly ball to shallow rf near the line.
On the play, Nicholson had to hold up to see if the ball (which
fell harmlessly between the right fielder, first baseman, and
second baseman) would be caught so he only advanced to 3b.
- Richardson hit a sac fly to lf (rbi). Nicholson scored.
- Cox singled to lf (rbi). Moore scored. On the play, Cox
apparently thought the throw from lf would go to the plate so
he tried to make 2b. The throw was cut-off, however, and he was
tagged out at 2b (7-6-4) fairly easily.
- Sepulveda grounded out to ss (6-3).
- 4th inning
- Rice:
- Crosby walked (full count).
- Hodge struck out looking (2-2 count).
- Thames struck out swinging (0-2 count).
- Baker struck out swinging (full count).
- Texas:
- Cridland doubled off the wall along the rf line.
- Schumacher grounded out to 2b. Cridland moved to 3b.
- Aspito reached on a 3-2 fielder's choice. Cridland was thrown out
easily at the plate.
- Kolbach singled on a high bouncer over the first baseman. Aspito
moved to 3b.
- Nicholson flew out to lf.
- 5th inning

- Berg popped out to 2b in foul territory.
- Savarino struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Curry struck out swinging (0-2 count).
- Texas:
- Moore lined out to lf (2 pitches).

- 6th inning
- Rice:
- Richards popped out to the catcher in foul territory (2 pitches).
- Williams popped out to 3b in foul territory (2 pitches).
- Crosby popped out to the catcher in front of the plate (1 pitch).
- Texas:
- Sepulveda grounded out to 3b (5-3).
- Cridland walked (full count).
- Schumacher flew out to lf.
- Aspito grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- 7th inning
- Rice (2 earned runs):
- Hodge hit his second homerun of the game over the 405 sign in
left-cf (nearly the same spot as his first homerun, rbi).
- Thames doubled to the lf corner.
- Texas sent Weaver in to pitch.
- Baker walked (3-1 count).
- Berg singled to cf (rbi). Thames scored. Baker moved to 2b.
- Savarino flew out to lf.
- Curry flew out to rf. Baker tagged up and moved to 3b.
- Richards grounded out to 3b (5-3). A great play by Aspito.
- Texas:
- Johnson (taking Kolbach's spot as dh) popped out to 1b in foul
territory.
- Nicholson walked on 4 pitche.
- Rice moved Hodge from 3b to pitcher and sent Fox in at 3b (taking
Berg's dh spot in the lineup).
- Moore popped out to the pitcher in foul territory.
- Edelstein (pinch hitting for Richardson) flew out to lf.
- 8th inning
- Rice:
- Texas kept Edelstein in at lf and moved Sepulveda to cf.
- Williams struck out looking (full count). On the play, he tried
to check his swing but was called out by the 3b ump.
- Crosby grounded out to ss (6-3).
- Hodge walked (full count).
- Thames grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice.
- Texas (4 earned runs):
- Cox walked on 4 pitches.
- Sepulveda reached on a bunt single past the second baseman charging
toward 1b to cover the bag. The ball rolled into shallow rf and
Cox was able to run all the way to 3b.
- Cridland singled off the wall in lf (rbi). Cox scored. On the
play, Sepulveda held up at 1b to see if the catch would be made
and only advanced to 2b. If he'd moved closer to 2b as he
waited for the outcome, he would've easily advanced to 3b and
Cridland would've had a double.
- Schumacher tripled to lf (2 rbi). On the play, the left fielder
charged and tried to catch the quickly falling ball at his ankles
but he missed it and the ball rolled past him to the lf corner.
- Aspito grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Johnson hit a sac fly to cf (rbi). Schumacher scored.
- Nicholson flew out to rf.
- 9th inning
- Rice (3 unearned runs):
- Baker grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Fox grounded out to ss (6-3).
- Savarino singled to lf.
- Curry reached on an error (e5). On the play, Aspito rushed his
throw and overthrew a leaping Schumacher by a couple of feet.
Savarino scored and Curry advanced to 2b.
- Richards hit a towering homerun over the lf fence (2 rbi).
- Texas sent Halter in to pitch.
- Williams grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas (1 earned run):
- Moore doubled to lf. The left fielder misplayed the ball a bit
as it got caught up in the wind and went over his head.
- Edelstein hit a sac bunt (4-3) to move Moore to 3b.
- Cox doubled to lf (rbi) to end the game.
