I went to Alaska smack dab in the middle of the summer of 1988...just over 9 years ago! It was a great trip. We flew into Anchorage and drove around for about a week, camping at roadside camps most nights. We had to resort to camping at a softball field one night, though, when we finally gave up on finding a "legal" campsite 'round about 1 in the morning. I think the thing that surprised me most about Alaska was how green it was. I didn't expect to see everything covered in snow (I knew it was summertime!) but simply was not prepared for how lush everything looked. This shot, of a valley along the Denali highway, is a great illustration of that very fact.
