Comments

Chris Edelstein did a great job in his first start of the year. He went 4-for-4 with a single, 2 doubles, a homerun, 3 runs scored, 2 runs batted in, and a stolen base. The Horns started out well but just let the game get away from them. Errors plagued the team. Actually, they plagued both teams but proved more harmful to the Horns. The weather was very pleasant...sunny with the temperature hovering in around 80 and wind blowing to lf.

    • Runk took the third pitch over the lf fence just short of the scoreboard (rbi).
    • Duncan struck out swinging (2-2 count).
    • Leimbek walked (3-1 count).

    • Runk struck out looking (1-2 count). He vehemently argued the call and I was surprised that the ump didn't eject him from the game as one of the ISU coaches had to come out of the dugout to pull Runk back.
    • Duncan tripled off the top of the lf wall (2 rbi). Scott and Bjorklund scored.
    • Leimbek struck out swinging (1-2 count).
  • Texas (3 earned runs):
    • Aspito singled to cf.
    • Sepulveda singled to lf. On the play, Aspito advanced to 3b and Sepulveda, seeing the throw go to 3b, tried to advance to 2b. He was thrown out, though (7-5-4).
    • Nicholson hit a sac fly to cf (rbi). Aspito scored.
    • Edelstein singled up the middle.
    • During Cox's at bat, Edelstein stole 2b and then advanced to 3b on an error (e2, bad throw from the catcher on the sb attempt).
    • Cox hit a squeeze bunt down the 3b line (rbi). Edelstein scored.
    • Moore hit a ground-rule double just to the right of the Green Monster in cf (rbi). Cox to 3b. If the ball had been about a foot to the left, it would probably have been a triple.
    • Cridland hit a beautiful bunt down the 3b line (rbi). Cox scored. Moore to 3b.
    • Schumacher walked to load the bases.
    • Kolbach hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice.
• 3rd inning
  • ISU (6 earned runs):
    • Uelmen reached on an infield singled to 3b. Aspito did a good job to keep the ball from getting into the outfield.
    • During Wierzbicki's at bat, Uelmen stole 2b. On the play, Cox had Uelmen picked off at 1b but took too long to throw to 1b and Uelmen slid safely into 2b for the sb.
    • Wierzbicki struck out swinging.
    • McDonough doubled off the wall in the lf/cf gap (rbi). Uelmen scored.
    • O'Brien reached on an infield single. Moore managed to knock the ball down and keep it from going into cf but couldn't catch up to the ball in time to make a play at 1b. McDonough to 3b.
    • Scott reached on a 5-unassisted fielder's choice. Aspito fielded, alertly stepped on 3b for the force but had no play at 1b. O'Brien to 2b.
    • Bjorklund singled to lf (rbi). O'Brien scored. Scott to 2b.

The ball looked for all the world like it was going to be a home run but the wind (blowing to lf) apparently held the ball up enough that the right fielder actually had a pretty easy play. By the time he made the catch, Moore had already run past 2b. The relay from 2b to 1b easily beat Moore.

    • Duncan hit a sac bunt down the 3b line (5-3). Runk to 2b.
    • Leimbek singled to lf (rbi). Runk scored.
    • Uelmen struck out swinging. Texas scored a double play as Leimbek was caught off the base on the 3rd strike. I believe the run down went 2-4-3-4.
