I've rarely seen anyone as happy as Kade Johnson was when he rounded 1b
after hitting his game-running homerun over the lf fence. What
excitement. This is, of course, the best way to win a game. When it's
all on the line and up to the last batter.
Hmmm...more highlights. In addition to his 2-rbi homerun, Johnson
started in lf for the first time this season and hit a 2-rbi double.
Cridland hit his 10th and 11th homeruns of the season as he continues to
pace the Horns in several offensive areas. Sepulveda, starting at cf,
went 3-for-4 and scored 2 runs. Defensively, there were several nice
plays made in the field and the team combined for 3 double plays.
And so...
Game summary:
- 1st inning
- OSU:
- Hill walked on 4 pitches.
- Lucas popped out to 2b (bunt attempt).
- Gasparino hit into a 5-4-3 double play.
- Texas (1 earned run):
- Cox singled to lf.
- Cridland was hit by a pitch (2-2 count). The ball appeared to
nick his leg as he tried to get avoid it. Cox moved to 2b.
- Moore singled up the middle (rbi). Cox scored. Cridland moved
to 2b. On the first pitch, Moore popped a bunt attempt foul
behind the plate. The catcher had a play but was unable to make
the catch. On the next pitch, Moore squared to bunt but then
pulled back at the last moment and slapped the ball through to
cf.
- Sepulveda hit a sac bunt toward 2b (4-3). Cridland moved to 3b.
Moore moved to 2b.
- Johnson struck out swinging (full count).
- Schumacher flew out to lf.
- 2nd inning
- OSU:
- Holliday struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Lucca grounded out to 1b (3-1).
- Fournier doubled to lf.
- McCullough grounded out to ss (6-3).
- Texas:
- Ivy flew out to rf.
- Nicholson grounded out to 1b (3-1).
- Aspito lined out to ss.
- 3rd inning
- OSU:
- Roossien flew out to cf. Sepulveda made a long run and then a
great catch against the wall to rob Roossien of at least a double.
- Puffinbarger struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Hill struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Texas (3 earned runs):
- Cox flew out to rf.
- Cridland popped out to 3b (foul).
- Moore singled to cf.
- Sepulveda singled to cf. Moore moved to 2b.
- Johnson doubled over 3b and into the lf corner (2 rbi).
- Schumacher walked (3-1 count).
- Ivy doubled to the rf corner (rbi). Johnson scored. Schumacher
tried to score but was thrown out at the plate (9-2).
- 4th inning
- OSU (2 unearned runs):
- Lucas doubled into the cf/rf gap.
- Gasparino flew out to rf.
- Holliday flew out to lf. Great running catch by Johnson.
- Lucca walked.
- Hale was called for a balk during Fournier's at bat so Lucas
moved to 3b and Lucca to 2b.
- Fournier reached on an error (e5). On the play, Aspito's throw
to Schumacher arrived at about the same time as the runner and
was thrown to the runner's side of the bag. The runner collided
with Schumacher, forcing the ball loose. It rolled slowly into
shallow rf. Lucas scored, Lucca moved to 3b, and Fournier moved
to 2b.
- McCullough singled to rf (rbi). Lucca scored. Fournier moved to
3b.
- Roossien struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Texas (2 earned runs):
- Nicholson grounded out to the pitcher (1-3).
- Aspito tripled to right cf. The ball took a high bounce over the
center fielder's head and rolled to the ball.
- Cox hit a sac fly to rf (rbi). McCullough made a great catch.
- Cridland hit a homerun over the rf fence.
- Moore struck out looking (2-2 count).
- 5th inning
- OSU (6 earned runs):
- Puffinbarger singled to rf.
- Hill popped up to ss.
- Lucas singled to lf. Puffinbarger moved to 2b. On the play,
Johnson mishandled the ball and both runners advanced an extra
base.
- Gasparino singled up the middle (2 rbi). Puffinbarger and Lucas
scored.
- Texas sent Munroe in to pitch.
- Holliday singled to lf.
- Lucca doubled off the top of the fence in the cf/rf gap (2 rbi).
Gasparino and Holliday scored.
- Fournier was intentionally walked [ed. note: argggghhhh!] to set
up the double play.
- McCullough hit a homerun over the lf fence. [ed. note: what double
play?] This turned into the oddest play I've ever seen at a game.
McCullough ran past Fournier between 1b and 2b and ended up
crossing the plate ahead of Fournier. The official scorer
apparently ruled McCullough out on a fly to lf and didn't count any
rbi's. That doesn't jive with my reading of the rules, however.
The rulebook says with fewer than two outs, if a batter, while
running the bases after a home run outside the playing field,
passes a preceding runner, the batter is out; but all preceding
runners score. In addition, it says when a runner is called
out for passing another runner, the putout shall be credited to the
fielder nearest the point of passing. So, to my reading,
McCullough should be credited with a single since he reached 1b
legally, the out should go to 1b (unassisted), and McCullough should
get two rbi's (since no mention is made of losing credit for runs
batted in). So, that's the way my box looks.
- Munroe threw one pitch to Roossien (a strike) and then Texas sent
Weaver in to pitch.
- Roosien struck out swinging (0-2 count).
- Texas:
- OSU sent Burgess in to pitch.
- Sepulveda singled to 3b. On the play, Holliday speared a line
drive but dropped the ball and it rolled foul. Again I differ
with the official scorer in my opinion...I would probably have
scored this an error.
- Johnson was hit by a pitch (1-1 count). Sepulveda moved to 2b.
- Schumacher lined out to 2b.
- Kolbach (new dh) flew out to cf. Sepulveda alertly tagged up and
moved to 3b.
- Nicholson walked to load the bases.
- Aspito grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- 6th inning
- OSU:
- Puffinbarger singled to lf.
- Hill hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
- Lucas popped out to ss in shallow lf. A great catch by Moore.
- Texas:
- Cox grounded out on a ball up the middle that ricocheted off the
pitcher's glove (1-6-3).
- Cridland singled to rf.
- Moore walked (3-1 count). Cridland moved to 2b.
- During Sepulveda's at bat, Cridland stole 3b.
- Sepulveda struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Johnson flew out to cf.
- 7th inning
- OSU:
- Gasparino popped out to 2b (near the rf line).
- Holliday singled to rf. Cridland did a good job running the ball
down and keeping Holliday to one base.
- Texas sent Seibel in to pitch.
- Lucca hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
- Texas (1 earned run):
- Schumacher doubled down the rf line.
- OSU sent Bergman in to pitch.
- Kolbach grounded out to 1b (3-1). Schumacher moved to 3b.
- Nicholson grounded out to 2b (4-3, rbi). Schumacher scored.
- Aspito reached on an error (e6). On the play (a high pop-up down
the lf line), Lucas almost made the catch but lost it at the last
second. In this instance, I think I would've scored it a hit.
The play was much more difficult than Holliday's in the 5th.
Shrug.
- Cox hit into a 5-4 fielder's choice.
- 8th inning
- OSU:
- Fournier grounded out to ss (6-3).
- McCullough walked (full count).
- Kaup (pinch hitting for Roossien) flew out to rf.
- Puffinbarger singled to lf. McCullough moved to 2b.
- Texas sent Halter in to pitch.
- Hill grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas (1 earned run):
- OSU kept Kaup in at 1b and sent Prata in to pitch.
- Cridland hit a towering homerun over the rf fence.
- Moore struck out looking (2-2 count).
- Sepulveda walked (full count).
- Johnson flew out to lf.
- Schumacher grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice.
- 9th inning
- OSU:
- Lucas flew out to rf.
- Gasparino flew out to rf.
- Holliday grounded out to 2b (4-3).

great catch by Aspito.
