Comments
The weather was great for baseball...sunny with temperatures in the low
60s. LSU had travel plans so the game, which started at 1 o'clock, had
a 4 o'clock curfew. As I wrote on the
Yada Yada page:
The Horns jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st and then fell behind
4-2 in the 5th but tied it up again in the bottom of the 5th. The
Tigers pulled ahead in the 6th (5-4) but Texas managed to scrape a
couple of runs across the plate in the 7th to regain the lead. LSU had
the tying run at 2b in the 8th but left him stranded. In the bottom of
the 8th, the Horns managed to plate one final run before the game was
called after Aspito's ground rule double over the fence in the cf/rf
gap. The Horns had runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs when the game
was called. Texas wins 7-5. Kautsch got his first win of the season
and Richardson showed signs of coming out of his early season slump
which can only be good news for Texas. One last note: LSU's homerun
streak (an NCAA record) was stopped at 77 games when they failed to hit
a homerun in today's game. Congrats to LSU for achieving a milestone I
can't imagine will ever be rivaled.
What I failed to mention was that we were all holding our collective
breaths watching the clock slowly wend its way toward 4 o'clock in that
8th inning. At 3:58, after Aspito had fought off two or three 0-2
pitches, Coach Garrido called time and took Aspito aside for a
conference. It was a time-killing exercise and after the game he
admitted as much. It turns out, the exercise wasn't required since
Aspito hit the ground rule double which would've brought another batter
to the plate.
And, so...
Game summary:
- 1st inning
- LSU:
- Dalton grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Higgins struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Barbier singled to lf.
- Furniss grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas (2 earned runs):
- Sepulveda walked (3-1 count).
- Nicholson walked (full count). Sepulveda moved to 2b.
- During Aspito's at bat, both runners advanced a base on a passed
ball.
- Sepulveda scored on a squeeze bunt by Aspito (rbi) toward the
mound on the 1b side (1-3). Nicholson moved to 3b.
- Kolbach walked (3-1 count).

- Cridland hit a sac fly to cf (rbi). Nicholson scored.
- Moore grounded out to 3b (5-3).
- 2nd inning
- LSU:
- McClure singled to lf.
- Earnhart lined out to lf. Sepulveda made a great sliding catch
to make the out. Earnhart, by the way, almost kept the LSU
homerun streak alive a couple of pitches earlier when he took an
0-1 pitch high over the rf fence. The wind was blowing pretty
strongly from lf, though, and the ball ended up being about 15
or 20 feet foul.
- Leaumont hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
- Texas:
- Ivy grounded out to ss (6-3).
- Johnson flew out to rf.
- Richardson struck out swinging (2-2 count).

- Witten doubled to cf (rbi). Thibodeaux scored.
- Dalton doubled to the lf/cf gap (rbi). Witten scored.
- Higgins lined out to cf.
- Barbier (after getting ahead 3-0 in the count) struck out
swinging.
- Furniss reached on an infield single to 2b. Nicholson made a
great play to knock the ball down and keep another run from
scoring. Dalton moved to 3b.
- McClure flew out to cf. Great play by Richardson to catch up
to the ball.
- Texas:
- Sepulveda grounded out to the pitcher (1-3).

Kolbach's at bat.

at bat.
- Witten walked after getting behind (1-2) in the count.

- Texas sent Kautsch in to pitch.
- McClure walked on four pitches to load the bases.
- Earnheart reached on a fielder's choice (rbi). The ball was
hit to Aspito at 3b. He fielded the ball and then hesitated,
thinking about throwing home for the force and then deciding
to go for the 5-4-3 double play. Sadly, since he hesitated,
all runners reached base safely. Higgins scored. Furniss
moved to 3b. McClure moved to 2b.
- Leaumont reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice (rbi). Furniss
scored. McClure moved to 3b.

- Kolbach tripled down the rf line (2 rbi).
- Cridland grounded out to 1b (unassisted).
- 6th inning
- LSU (1 earned run):
- Witten flew out to rf (foul). Cridland made a long run for the
ball and ended up sliding into the retaining fence down the rf
line.
- Dalton struck out looking (2-2 count).
- Higgins was hit by a pitch (2-2 count).

- Earnhart grounded out to 3b (5-3).
- Texas:

catch near the foul line.
- Higgins singled to lf.
- LSU sent Harris in to pinch run for Higgins.
- Barbier was hit by a pitch (1-2 count). Harris moved to 2b.
- Furniss struck out looking (1-2 count).
- McClure reached on 6U fielder's choice.
- Texas (1 unearned run, 4 o'clock is just around the corner):
- LSU kept Harris in at cf and moved McClure to 3b. Since McClure
was the dh, Esteves ended up going into Thibodeaux's #8 spot in
the lineup.
- Johnson popped out to 3b (full count).
- Richardson singled to lf (full count).
- Sepulveda struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Nicholson singled up the middle. On the play, Harris (LSU cf)
bobbled the ball, allowing Richardson to score (e8).

- At this poing, 4 o'clock rolled around and since the home team was
in the lead, the game was called.
