Comments
The game was scheduled for 9 innings but it was announced at the start
that it could not run past 5:00 pm in order for Stanford to catch their
flight home. It was a very exciting (if somewhat anti-climactic) ending
to the game as the public address announcer let us know the 5th inning
would be the last. At the time of the announcement, Texas was behind
6-7 with two outs. Needless to say, the crowd was not happy. But, the
Horns scraped together a tying run. The bottom half of the lineup
accounted for all the run production in today's game. Cridland had his
game of the year so far, breaking out of a bit of a slump and going
3-for-3 (1 single, 2 doubles) and scoring 3 runs.
And, so...
Game summary:
- 1st inning
- Stanford (2 runs, 1 unearned):
- Schrager flew out to rf (foul).
- Gerut walked (full count) and moved to 2b on a wild pitch during
Hochgesang's at bat.
- Hochgesang hit a sac fly to cf. Gerut moved to 3b.
- Gall singled to lf (rbi). Gerut scored.
- During Day's at bat, Gall broke for 2b on a passed ball. Johnson
tried to catch him but threw off-target. Gall was able to make
3b on the throwing error to 2b (e2).
- Day singled to lf (rbi). Gall scored.
- Pecci lined out to 2b.
- Texas:
- Loeffler walked (full count).
- Aspito struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Schumacher reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice.
- Kolbach struck out swinging (full count).
- 2nd inning
- Stanford (1 earned run):
- Salter flew out to rf.
- Borchard singled up the middle.
- Muth singled to rf. Borchard moved to 2b.
- Schrager was hit by the first pitch to load the bases.
- Gerut hit a sac fly (in foul territory) to lf (rbi). Borchard
scored.
- Hochgesang grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas (3 runs, 2 unearned):
- Cridland doubled off the lf fence.
- Moore grounded into a 4-3 sac bunt. Cridland moved to 3b.
- Nicholson reached on a squeeze bunt (rbi). Cridland scored as the
pitcher had difficulty fielding the ball.
- Johnson reached on an error (e5) as the third baseman threw wide
of 1b trying to cut the runner down. Nicholson moved to 3b and
Johnson advanced to 2b.
- Richardson reached on a fielder's choice (rbi). It was the
second squeeze play of the inning for Texas. The pitcher fielded
the ball cleanly but Nicholson managed to beat out the tag by the
catcher to score. Johnson moved to 3b.
- Loeffler struck out swinging (full count). During his at bat,
the home plate ump called time. The third base ump did not see
the call, however, and called a balk on the pitcher. The home
plate ump corrected the call and sent the runners back to their
bases. One of the Stanford assistant coaches (I think it was
Dunton, the pitching coach) came out of the dugout yelling at the
umps. The home plate ump told him to go back to the dugout, that
things were under control and he continued to yell. So, he was
ejected. It took a few minutes to get the game back on track.
- Aspito flew out to cf.
- 3rd inning
- Stanford (3 unearned runs):
- Gall struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- Day doubled past ss.
- Pecci reached on a 1-6 fielder's choice. On the play, Day broke
for 3b. Seibel fielded cleanly, though, and caught Day in a run
down.
- Salter reached on a 5-4 fielder's choice. On the play, Aspito
apparently felt he couldn't get Salter out at 1b so he tried to
make the out at 2b but threw high (e5) pulling Nicholson off the
bag. Pecci reached 2b safely.
- Borchard walked (full count) to load the bases.
- Muth hit a bases-clearing double off the rf fence (3 rbi).
- Schrager was walked intentionally.
- Gerut grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas (1 earned run):
- Schumacher grounded out to 3b (5-3). It was a great play by
Hochgesang. The ball looked like the ss would have a tough time
fielding the ball in time to get the throw to 1b, but Hochgesang
came out of nowhere to field the ball and throw Schumacher out.
- Kolbach struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Cridland singled to rf.
- Moore reached on an improbably infield single. He hit a high
bouncer (the highest I can remember seeing) off the plate and
reached 1b before the ss was able to field the ball. Cridland
moved to 2b.
- During Nicholson's at bat, Cridland advanced to 3b and Moore to
2b on a wild pitch.
- Nicholson walked (3-1 count).
- During Johnson's at bat, the runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Cridland scored. Moore moved to 3b and Nicholson to 2b.
- Johnson walked (full count).
- Richardson struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- The pitcher was having a tough time keeping the ball out of the
dirt during most of the inning...thus the wild pitches.
- 4th inning
- Stanford (1 earned run):
- Texas sent Halter in to pitch.
- Hochgesang walked (3-1 count).
- Gall singled up the middle. The ball hit the pitcher's mound
and bounced over Nicholson's head into cf. Hochgesang moved to
3b.
- Day hit into a 5-4-3 double play. Hochgesang scored.
- Pecci grounded out to 2b (4-3).
- Texas:
- Loeffler reached on an error (e4).
- Aspito grounded out on a sac bunt toward the mound (1-3).
Loeffler moved to 2b.
- Schumacher lined out to 1b. Loeffler barely made it back to 2b
in time to avoid the double play.
- Kolbach struck out swinging (2-2 count).
- 5th inning
- Stanford:
- Salter lined out to rf.
- Borchard walked (3-1 count).
- Texas sent Kautsch in to pitch.
- Muth lined out to cf.
- Schrager flew out to cf.
- Texas (3 runs, 1 unearned):
- Cridland doubled down the lf line.
- Moore hit a triple off the lf fence (rbi). Cridland scored.
- Stanford sent Cogan in to pitch.
- Nicholson lined out to 2b.
- Johnson singled up the middle (rbi). Moore singled.
- Texas announced Simpson as a pinch hitter for Richardson.
- Stanford sent Wayne in to pitch.
- Edelstein (pinch hitting for Simpson) popped out to 3b (foul).
- Loeffler came up to bat and we were informed by the public
address announcer that this would be the last inning of the
game.
- Loeffler walked on four pitches.
- Aspito reached on an error (e5). On the play, the third
baseman rushed his throw and was a bit off-target. On the play,
Johnson rounded 3b and headed for home. The first baseman tried
to throw him out but his throw was also off-target (e3). Johnson
scored. Loeffler moved to 3b. Aspito moved to 2b.
- Schumacher flew out to cf to end the game in a tie.
