Talk about your fun. I always like to watch games when a team comes
from way behind to win...especially when it's the Horns! They were
behind 9-1 at one point and pulled out the win in the bottom of the
9th. Whew. Barker got into big trouble early...4 hits and 2 walks to
the 6 batters he faced...resulting in 5 earned runs. The whole team
rallied around, refused to give up, and came out on top. Offensively,
there were plenty of highlights...going down the line: Gutierrez went
2 for 5 and scored 3 runs, Harkrider went 3 for 4 and scored 4,
Cridland went 4 for 4 and scored 3, Edelstein failed to score but drove
in 4 runs, Kiemsteadt hit a pinch-hit 2-run triple in the 8th to push
the Horns ahead for the first time in the game, and Loeffler hit his
first homerun of the season.
By the way...
A third unexplained error for Houston showed up on the scoreboard in
the 7th or 8th inning. I'm guessing the official scorer must've charged
an error on one of the extra-base hits (changing a double to a single +
an error since the hit-total stayed the same) but I'm not sure which
play it could've been. So, I'm leaving my box the way it is.
Game summary:
- 1st inning
- Houston:
- Tomlinson singled to deep 2b and then stole 2b.
- Carr walked on 4 pitches.
- Schreiber singled to lf. Tomlinson scored. Carr moved all the
way to 3b and Schreiber to 2b on an error by Walsh (E7) who was
unable to corral the ball quickly enough.
- Keithley singled to rf. Carr and Schreiber scored.
- Keithley stole 2b during Rios' at-bat.
- Rios walked on 4 pitches.
- Keithley moved to 3b and Rios to 2b on a passed ball during
Medrano's at-bat.
- Medrano singled to cf. Keithley scored. Rios moved to 3b.
Medrano was able to reach 2b on the throw in since nobody
covered 2b.
- Texas sent Starcich in to pitch.
- Lee grounded out to ss. Rios scored. medrano moved to 3b.
- Ware flew out to rf.
- Skrehot grounded out to the pitcher.
- Texas:

- Gutierrez was called out on strikes.
- Harkrider grounded out to 1b.
- 2nd inning
- Houston:
- Tomlinson grounded out to 2b.
- Carr singled to lf.

- 3rd inning
- Houston:

Harkrider had no chance to make a play at 1b.

- Texas:
- Rumfield grounded out to ss -- a very nice play by Skrehot.

- Walsh grounded out to 2b.
- Gutierrez grouned out to 1b -- the pitcher covered the bag.
- 4th inning
- Houston:
- Carr flew out to rf.
- Schreiber hit a double off the top of the wall near the 405 sign
in lf/cf. If the ball had gone an inch further, it would've been
a homerun...as it was, the ball bounced right back into the field
at the waiting Loeffler.
- Keithley was intentionally walked. [Sigh...I'm never comfortable
with handing out free passes.]
- Rios singled to rf. Schreiber scored. Keithley moved to 3b.
Houston executed the hit-and-run perfectly. As soon as Starcich
was into his wind-up, the baserunners broke, forcing Gutierrez to
move toward 2b to cover the bag. Rios hit a hard liner to the
spot just vacated by Gutierrez and the runners were able to advance
two bases easily since they were already on the move when Rios hit
the ball.
- Texas sent Clements in to pitch.

- Cridland doubled to the lf corner. Gutierrez scored. Harkrider

- Houston kept Caraway in the game in lf.
- Carter (pinch-hitting for Rumfield) was called out on strikes.
- Loeffler was called out on strikes.
- Walsh went down swinging.
- 7th inning
- Houston:
- Texas kept Carter in the game at 1b, moved Johnson to 3b, and
sent Spiker in to catch.
- Tomlinson reached on an infield single to 1b.
- Carr hit a sacrifice bunt down the 1b line. Tomlinson moved to
2b.
- Schreiber was intentionally walked.
- Scott (pinch-hitting for Keithley) grounded out to ss. Again,
a nicely executed hit-and-run to avoid the double play.
Tomlinson moved to 3b. Schreiber moved to 2b.
- Rios grounded out to 2b.
- Texas:
- Houston kept Scott in the game at 1b.
- Gutierrez doubled to rf.

- Houston sent Marik in to pitch and Ferrell in at 1b.
- Johnson singled to lf. Harkrider and Cridland scored.
- Edelstein hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
- Spiker flew out to lf.
- 8th inning
- Houston:
- Caraway flew out to lf.
- Lee doubled down the lf line.
- Texas sent French in to pitch.
- Ware was called out on strikes.
- Skrehot singled to lf and moved to 2b on the throw. Lee scored.
- Tomlinson was intentionally walked.
- During Carr's at-bat, Skrehot and Tomlinson advanced one base on
a successful double steal.
- Carr flew out to deep in the lf/cf gap -- a fantastic play by Walsh
who caught the ball as he was running full-speed.
- Texas:
- Carter walked.
- Loeffler was hit by a pitch -- 'looked like it grazed his jersey
near his shoulder. Carter moved to 2b.
- Carter moved to 3b and Loeffler to 2b on a balk called against
Marik during Walsh's at-bat.
- Walsh popped up to 1b.
- Gutierrez singled up the middle. Carter and Loeffler scored.
Loeffler slipped and fell between 3b and home but recovered in
plenty of time to beat the throw in.
- Houston sent Manbeck in to pitch.
- Harkrider reached on a perfect bunt toward the mound. The pitcher
had no play at any base by the time he fielded the ball. Gutierrez
moved to 2b.
- Kiemsteadt (pinch-hitting for Cridland) tripled to the rf corner.
Gutierrez and Harkrider scored.
- Johnson reached on a 4-2 fielder's choice. It was a perfect throw
on a "bang-bang" play from the second baseman. If he'd
stopped for a second to reconsider throwing home, Kiemsteadt
would've beat the tag.
- Hart (pinch-hitting for Edelstein) flew out to deep lf.
- 9th inning
- Houston:
- Schreiber doubled down the lf line.
- Ferrell took one or two pitches and Houston sent Stephens in to
pinch-run for Schreiber at 2b.
- Ferrell singled up the middle. Stephens scored. Game tied!
- Rios flew out to cf.
- Caraway went down swinging.
- Lee wnet down swinging.
- Texas:
- Houston sent Jackson in to pitch.
- Spiker doubled to the rf corner.
- Carter hit a sacrifice bunt (3U) down the 1b line. Spiker moved
to 3b.
- Loeffler was intentionally walked to set up the double play.
- Walsh reached on an error by the shortstop. Spiker scored. Game
over. Whew. Note: It would've been a very close play
but Walsh's ball could've been a double-play ball. It was a high
bouncer over 2b. Skrehot was concentrating so hard on getting the
ball out of his glove to try and get Walsh out that he bobbled the
ball and didn't even get the out at 2b. Whew...too much excitement
for one game!
