Comments

After yesterday's game, we all thought the team had finally found their rhythm. Apparently not. Once again, the team made several mental errors that won't show up on a score sheet. And then there were the 5 runs SHSU scored with 2 outs in the 6th. Not much else to say so I guess I'll get on with the game summary...

Game summary:

• 1st inning
  • SHSU:
    • Prihoda singled to rf and then stole 2b.
    • Tanner grounded out to the pitcher. Prihoda moved to 3b.
    • Thames grounded out to ss. Prihoda scored.
    • Carter reached on an error. He hit a slow moving ball down the 3b line. In an effort to beat the runner, Rumfield tried to rush his throw but ended up dropping it instead (E5).
    • Carter stole 2b during Bubela's at bat. The Horns didn't make much effort at all to hold him at 1b.
    • Bubela grounded out to 2b.
  • Texas:
    • Walsh singled to lf.
    • Gutierrez hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
    • Harkrider grounded out to 1b.
• 2nd inning
  • SHSU:
    • Eddlemon doubled to the rf corner.
    • Beltran bunted safely down 1b line. Gutierrez failed to cover 1b on the bunt so Johnson, fielding the ball, had no play. Eddlemon moved to 3b.
    • Beltran moved to 2b on a passed ball during Haynes' at-bat.
    • Haynes hit a sacrifice fly to lf...and into an unusual double play. Eddlemon tagged up and scored. Beltran also tagged up and tried to move to 3b on the throw in but Harkrider cut off the throw and tagged Beltran out.
    • Hopkins flew out to rf.
  • Texas:
    • Cridland grounded out to 1b (the pitcher covered 1b).
    • Johnson hit a towering homerun over the lf fence.
    • Rumfield was hit by a pitch.
    • Simpson hit into a 5-4-3 double play. A very nice play by SHSU.
• 3rd inning
  • SHSU:
    • Prihoda was called out on strikes.
    • Tanner flew out to lf.
    • Thames singled up the middle past a diving Harkrider.
    • Thames tried to steal 2b on the first pitch to Carter but was thrown out on a beautiful throw from Hart to Gutierrez covering the bag.
  • Texas:
    • Hart singled on a hard-hit ball that glanced of the third baseman's shoulder.
    • Kiemsteadt squared to bunt and as the third baseman creeped in to cover the bunt, he hit a slap bunt that bounced over the third baseman's head. It was perfectly hit. Hart moved to 2b.
    • Walsh flew out to lf.
    • Gutierrez flew out to lf.
    • Harkrider singled to rf. Hart scored and Kiemsteadt moved to 3b.
    • Cridland went to the plate and Texas attempted a double steal. Harkrider broke for 2b. The catcher threw toward 2b -- the pitcher missed the cut-off but the ball glanced off his glove. Kiemsteadt broke for home but was thrown out on a perfect throw from the second baseman.
• 4th inning
  • SHSU:
    • Texas sent Loeffler in at cf.
    • Carter grounded out to ss.
    • Bubela singled to lf.
    • Eddlemon went down swinging.
    • Beltran flew out to cf.
  • Texas:
    • Cridland grounded out to 2b.
    • Johnson went down swinging.
    • Rumfield was called out on strikes.
• 5th inning
  • SHSU:
    • Haynes grounded out to 3b.
    • Hopkins popped up to shallow cf.
    • Prihoda walked on 4 pitches.
    • Tanner reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice.
  • Texas:
    • Simpson went down swinging.
    • Hart and Loeffler were called out on strikes...both on full-count pitches. That made 5 strikeouts in a row for Boedeker.
• 6th inning
  • SHSU:
    • Thames was out on a line drive to cf.
    • Carter singled to ss -- a very high-bouncing ball that took so long to come down, Harkrider didn't have a play.
    • Bubela reached on a 5-4 fielder's choice.
    • Eddlemon doubled to the cf/rf gap. Bubela scored.
    • Beltran walked.
    • Haynes reached on an infield single toward 2b. Eddlemon moved to 3b. Beltran moved to 2b.
    • SHSU sent Crosby in to pinch-hit for Hopkins.
    • Texas sent Dunn in to pitch.
    • SHSU sent Hurta in to pinch-hit for Crosby.
    • Hurta singled on a high-bouncer over Gutierrez's head. Since the ball rolled into shallow rf, Eddlemon and Beltran were able to score while Haynes moved all the way to 3b.
    • Hurta stole 2b during Prihoda's at-bat.
    • Prihoda singled to rf. Hurta scored.
    • On the first pitch to tanner, Prihoda tried to steal 2b but was thrown out by Hart (Gutierrez covered 2b).
  • Texas:
    • SHSU sent Gaffney in at 3b. He took Carter's place in the line-up which took the designated hitter away from SHSU. So, Boedeker was moved into the lineup in the #9 slot.
    • Gutierrez led off with a double down the lf line.
    • Harkrider doubled to rf. Gutierrez scored.
    • Cridland walked.
    • Johnson singled to rf to load the bases.
    • Rumfield hit a sacrfice fly to cf. Harkrider scored.
    • Simpson walked to load the bases again.
    • And...that's when the fun began. Texas had Edelstein standing in the on-deck circle warming up...as though to pinch-hit for Hart. The SHSU coach went to the mound to talk to the pitcher. A second SHSU pitcher (Riley) had finished his warm-up and started to run onto the field but the coach waved him back. Texas sent Chapple to join Edelstein in the on-deck circle. SHSU left Boedeker in as the pitcher. Texas sent Chapple in to pinch-hit. After two pitches to Chapple (1-1 count), Texas sent Edelstein in to pinch-hit. SHSU sent Riley in to pitch. Texas then sent Carter in to pinch-hit. He went down swinging for the final out of the inning.
• 7th inning
  • SHSU:
    • Texas sent Spiker in to catch.
    • Tanner grounded out to ss.
    • Thames flew out to rf.
    • Gaffney grounded out to 3b.
  • Texas:
    • Loeffler flew out to lf.
    • Walsh flew out to rf.
    • Gutierrez grounded out to the pitcher (bunt attempt).
• 8th inning
  • SHSU:
    • Bubela flew out to lf.
    • Eddlemon went down swinging.
    • Beltran grounded out to the pitcher.
  • Texas:
    • Harkrider reached on an error by the second baseman who dropped a line drive hit to his left.
    • Cridland reached on a 1-6 fielder's choice.
    • Johnson flew out to cf.
    • Rumfield flew out to cf. A very nice catch by Haynes.
• 9th inning
  • SHSU:
    • Haynes walked on 4 pitches.
    • Riley hit a sacrifice bunt toward the pitcher. Haynes moved to 2b.
    • Texas sent French in to pitch.
    • Prihoda grounded out to 1b. Haynes moved to 3b.
    • Tanner went down on called strikes.
  • Texas:
    • Simpson singled to lf.
    • Texas sent Lee in to pinch run.
    • During Spiker's at-bat, Lee tried to steal 2b. But, SHSU anticipated the steal...Riley threw a pitch-out and Lee was caught easily (ss covered 2b).
    • Spiker went down swinging.
    • Loeffler grounded out to ss to end the game.
