Austin Regional - Day 3, Game 6 (Stanford at North Carolina State)
Stanford ended up beating NC-State 17-7 to win the Austin Regional. It was actually a very close game for the first half of the game. The score was tied at 5 at the end of the 5th. But, the Wolfpack ran out of pitching and things fell apart after that.
Some random notes:
- Minaker came up to the plate 6 times, reached 6 times (a walk, 2 singles, 2 doubles, 1 triple) and scored all 6 times. Amazing.
- Stanford did something weird that I've seen done a couple of times. I can't remember why teams do it, though. They listed Gallagher as the dh (in the 7th spot in the order). He was due up as the first batter in the top of the 2nd. But, Stanford sent Milleville in to pinch hit. Why list Gallagher in the first place?
- Stanford scored at least once in every inning but the 4th.
- Only one NC-State player used high socks with his uniform: #37, Branden Knapp. The only Texan on the team.
- Several (at least 5 or 6) of the NC-State players were even more extreme than usual on the "no socks" thing. They actually had the backs of the legs of their pants stretched down over the backs of their shoes...like some sort of bizarre reverse spats thing. It was really weird looking.
- Jon Still hit two home runs on the day (his 8th and 9th of the year, I think): the Monster shot against Texas and then a 3-run shot into the trees beyond the rf fence.
- Chris Lewis and Cord Phelps were the only position players to start for Stanford that failed to score any runs. You don't suppose they'll get any ribbing about that from the rest of the team, do you? Nah.
- Stanford sent 10 players to the plate in the 9th. Not pretty.
- It was hot out there. The scoreboard read 98 deg. F at about 5 o'clock. Ugh.
