The final installment of Shawnee Kilgore's Wonder What Wednesdays residency at The Townsend happened last night. Her guest was Jon Dee Graham. What a great night. I loved this series and am looking forward to another round in a few months! My Instagram clips:
Sarah Sharp plays at the Elephant Room every Tuesday at 6. I wish I could go every week but I have a tough time getting away from the office in time to do that. I always enjoy myself when I do make it down there, though. Last night she started with Mitch Watkins on guitar and Masumi Jones on drums. But, they were soon joined by Oliver Steck on piano and trumpet, and then John Fremgen on bass. My Instagram clips:
I've been wanting to catch a Ginny Marie show since I'd noticed that Sophia Johnson was playing in her band. I finally managed to catch them for an hour or so yesterday afternoon at Craft Pride down on Rainey Street. I tend to avoid Rainey Street because parking is terrible. But, I decided I'd risk it on a Sunday afternoon. I'm not sorry I made the effort! They had Sophia on guitar, Ileana Nina on fiddle, and Curtis Sigurd on upright bass. My Instagram clips:
I hit the road as soon as the Ginny Marie show ended and drove down to Gruene Hall to see Jeff Plankenhorn's last show before he heads off to Canada for a couple of months. I'm so glad I made it. He and the band were in fine form. He had Dave Scher on guitar, Yoggie Musgrove on bass, and Brian Mendes on drums. My Instagram clips:
Elizabeth Wills does not play out much (plus she lives up DFW-way) so it's always a treat when she comes to Central Texas to play a show. And, when she plays it at the Bugle Boy, you know I'm gonna make every effort to be there! Last night was no exception. Lots of fun was had by all. Elizabeth had Kristin DeWitt singing harmonies. Jana Pochop was also there and shared a couple of songs! Me in my happy place. :-) My Instagram clips:
I made it out to see Bob Livingston at The Bugle Boy last night. He's had a long and storied career and it's always fun listening to his stories. Alas, I did not clip any of them! My Instagram clips:
I managed to catch Brian Kremer at Stay Gold last night. It had been much too long. Brian is a gem. He was playing with his jazz quintet which, last night, was made up of Collin Shook on piano, Sam Pankey on bass, Paul Deemer on trombone, and Daniel Dufour on drums. It was a fun night. I only managed a couple of Instagram clips, though:
Shawnee Kilgore's guest for the 3rd installment of her Wonder What Wednesdays residency at The Townsend was Ray Prim. The first few times I saw Ray were at Flipnotics (RIP) about 10 years ago—maybe longer. He used to host a songwriters-in-the-round series there that was pretty special. It's always a treat seeing Ray. And, last night was no exception. My Instagram clips:
I was planning to go to the Grouchy Like Riley CD release party at Donn's Depot on Sunday afternoon. I thought it was gona go from 4 to 8 and I was working on a couple of projects and dilly-dallying around and suddenly it was 6:30 so I hopped in my car and headed down there—thinking I'd catch the last hour or so of the show. It was almost 7 as I pulled up and I was puzzled by the dearth of cars in the lot. And, then I saw Danny, Marvin, Chip, and a couple of other folks walking out with their gear. Huh? Danny told me the show was over—that it ended at 6. Sigh. So, when I realized they were doing a show at Gruene Hall last night, I tried again. I managed to get there in plenty of time and stuck around for a couple of hours. It was a good night! BTW, Grouchy Like Riley is Danny Britt, Marvin Dykhuis, and Chip Dolen. They had Rick Richards and Brad Houser playing with them. My Instagram clips:
The Austin Empty Bowl Project helps raise money to fight hunger in the Austin area. Yesterday afternoon, they had their summer concert featuring music by Adam Carroll and Chris Carroll, Grace Pettis, and Shawnee Kilgore. The summer event is a lot smaller than the big event they host in November but it's always fun. I'm so glad I was able to go. A few links:
I went straight from the Empty Bowl show to the Bugle Boy to see Warren Hood. I was very happily surprised to see he had Marshall Hood and Willie Pipkin with him. I used to get to see them play pretty often back in the day but don't see them as much these days so it was a special treat to see them in my favorite venue. A few links:
Briana Adams and Morgan Ashley (warning Morgan's page starts playing music as soon as it opens) are a couple of "up and coming" songwriters from near La Grange. They made their Bugle Boy debuts last night and played a song-swap. I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it but things worked out in my favor. I enjoyed the show. Some links:
