I get home this evening at about 7:30 or so. It's already pretty dark outside. The streetlight near the entrance to my garage isn't working (a casualty of the hail storm, perhaps?) and I can just see the reflectors spinning as a couple of kids ride their bikes in the roadway. They're darting in and out of the roadway, into the alleys, and back into the main road. The speed limit is only 10 mph in my complex so they're rather carefree, despite the darkness. I guess their eyes have adjusted to the dark. I park in the garage and close it behind me. As I get out of the car, I can hear the kids very clearly just outside the garage door.
One of them: "I'm gonna try."
I can't make out what the other one says. Then, there's knocking on the garage door.
Me (through the door): "What do you need?"
Kid: "Oh, nothing...nevermind."
So, I open the door again and the two kids on the bikes are riding away. A third kid...about 6 years old, and very cute...comes running up.
Kid: "Do I know you?"
Me (smiling): "I don't think so."
Kid: "Oh. Do you have any kids?"
Me: "Nope. Sorry."
Kid: "Okay."
And, off he goes, skipping into the darkness. Apparently, he's just in search of someone to play with. And, there clearly aren't any good prospects in my house.
Sigh...
